I just heard from Ruth, a good friend of mine, that her salary was tripled by her employer because of some strategy she learned from a career seminar. Most of employees believe that it is better to start their career in the bottom and earn their way up to the top. They think that eventually, while they are being promoted, they will gain a higher salary with the higher position. This is an idealistic approach to career according to Ruth. From what Ruth shared with me, if you want to earn more the first thing you need to do is become an indispensable asset of the company. By then you can demand more. What she did, she looked into Atlanta job search then applied in a company with a better offer. She showed her job offer to her boss and told him that she is planning to take it because of the fair salary. Her boss, realizing that it is hard to find another employee as better that Ruth, gave a counter offer. Of course, Ruth took the counter offer because she was already happy with her job and her only issue is the salary. As this does not apply to everyone, we must realize that Ruth did all her best to become an expert in her line of work. If she did not, her boss would probably just let her go or she might not have gotten a good job offer in the first place. The point here is, do your best in your work. If you think you have done your best already, better make your boss realize it.
