A Blue Full Moon on New Year’s Eve 2009

mumblings, tips & tricks No Comments »

While browsing the net for a free life insurance quote, I accidentally encountered an astonishing 2009 New Year’s Eve Trivia!

It’s going to be a Blue Moon New Year’s Eve 2009. ^_^

Blue Full Moon on New Year's Eve 2009

For those who don’t know, a Blue Moon is the 2nd Full moon in a single calendar month. You see, most years generally have 12 full moons which occur approximately monthly. However, in addition to those 12 full lunar cycles, each solar calendar year contains an excess of roughly eleven days compared to the lunar year. As written in Wikipedia, “The extra days accumulate, so that every two or three years (on average about every 2.7154 years), there is an extra full moon. The extra moon is called a ‘blue moon.’”

For this December 2009, there’s a full moon on the 2nd and 31st. This will be the 13th Full Moon of 2009 and it’s going to be a Blue Full Moon the same night it turns a new decade. The next Blue Moon New Year’s Eve will be in 29 years on December 31, 2028. Amazing isn’t it?

Additional Trivia: the term “blue moon” is also commonly used metaphorically to describe the rarity of an event (i.e. the idiomatic expression, “once in a blue moon.”)

Have a Happy Blue Full Moon New Year’s Eve! ^_^

The timing is never right

I’ve often wondered what I really want in life. I mean, what’s the use of having a great house and car, a fully covered health and life insurance, a huge savings account if I’m not happy. Then again, what would make me happy?

There was one point where I thought I knew. I still think that’s the source of my happiness every now and then… Anyway, at the moment, I intend to fulfill all my dreams in my “must do” list and just enjoy each moment while it last. Come to think of it, instead of worrying about what would make me happy, I should be living my life and choosing to be happy! Worrying is a waste.

After all, the timing is never right. And I quote from one of the best books I’ve read,

“The stars will never align and the traffic lights of life will never all be green at the same time. The universe doesn’t conspire against you. But it doesn’t go out of its way to line up all the pins either. Conditions are never perfect. ‘Someday’ is a disease that will take your dreams to the grave with you. Pro and con lists are just as bad. If it’s important to you and you want to do it ‘eventually’, just do it and correct course along the way.”

So, carpe diem my dear friends! Go make your dreams into reality! Only you can do it. 0;)

Helping to ADHD awareness

health information, health & society No Comments »

Everyone seems to be in a very enthusiastic mood. Christmas break is up so were back to work again, not that we really stopped working in the holidays right? Fortunately, the boss is still out, on vacation leave, and there are no tasks to do. So today is just a free day at the office: watching movies, wasting bandwidth an oh, chit-chat to catch up with colleagues.

Earlier me and my office friends went to have an early lunch in a nearby cafe. While we were eating, a young lady approached us wanting share some information regarding ADHD. I became curious, for I thought it was another of those “save the earth movement” by Greenpeace. We asked: “what is adhd ? The young lady gave us a leaflet about it. ADHD stands for Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, a psychiatric disorder affecting 3 to 5 percent of children all over the world. One of the main symptoms is hyperactivity which occurs when the child is alone. This case is similar to autism, although this is considered easier to manage.

We gave some cash donation to the young lady to help in their drive promoting awareness to ADHD. It’s the season of giving anyway so we fortunate peeps should share our blessings with others. After lunch, we went back to the office and shared the leaflets to others so they can take part in sharing the info to others.

Faulty finger print scanners

tips & tricks No Comments »

Our company recently adapted some tight security measures to protect its assets and employees. In line with this, finger print scanners were installed beside the doors to monitor who comes in or goes out. This came about because of some stranger getting into the office without inspection. It turned out that the stranger was just a solicitor from an insurance agency. But still, the instance was really alarming since we are a fast growing company and most of the employees are young adults (not to mention forty percent female workforce).Anyhow, there was a big problem with the fingerprint scanners. It seems that there are lapses in the logging and some people have very fine fingerprints that the machine cannot sense it. Other problems like same logs for two people also occurred. Right now, we are in the process of negotiating with the supplier on what they could do to prevent this instances. And so, until the bugs with the finger scanners are resolved, we will just use our backup barcode scanner. For me, this is even reliable than that pesky new scanner.

The importance of monthly Breast Self Exam (BSE)

fitness advice, tips & tricks No Comments »

We had an annual medical checkup in my company last December 1, and other than the lump/mass in my left breast, the result was that I am perfectly fit to work. The lump, according to the doctor, could most likely be just due to hormonal change. But just to be sure, the doctor gave me a referral to have breasts ultrasound.

Unfortunately, my company switched to another HMO last December 14. We haven’t had time yet for the new HMO orientation though because it’s been a very busy month. I just hope it has similar benefits like the Blue Advantage - my dream health plan.

Anyway, I’ll just schedule myself for a breast ultrasound as soon as I get the details of our new HMO. As you know, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women (TRIVIA: 1 out of every 8 women will develop the disease). Finding a breast change does not necessarily mean there is a cancer. That’s why I’m pretty confident that mine’s not cancerous. Still, prevention is always better than cure.

Breast Self ExamIn fact, in our case, performing a breast self exam (BSE) every month is key in preventing breast cancer. The exam is simple to do and only takes 10-15 minutes each month! All you need is a mirror which lets you see both breasts, a pillow for your head and shoulders, and privacy. That’s it!

Tools you need to succeed in the fast-paced world

Nowadays, time management, skill, and knowledge update are very essential to having an edge over others and being successful. As Robert Kiyosaki (author of “Rich Dad, Poor Dad”), aptly wrote, “The single most powerful asset we all have is our mind.” and “The person who has the most timely information owns the wealth.” Agree?

Considering that it’s now a fast-paced world, what do you do? It’s simple, enroll in an online university. But don’t just enroll somewhere that just enables you to study anytime and anywhere, think of the cost as well! After all, if you can get your bachelors degree online at a lower rate while maintaining the high-quality standards with all the credentials, you’d grab that opportunity, right?

So far, I’d recommend Western Governors Online University or WGU – a non-profit and Northwest Commission of Colleges and Universities accredited university. Aside from the fact that you pay for the time, not the credit hours, since they charge tuition at a flat rate every six months; compared to the reputable ones, their tuition is just typically half the cost! Now that’s what I call getting your money’s worth.

Hope this information helps you get to have all the tools you need to be on your way to the wonderful world of success!

On dark circles around the eyes

health information No Comments »

When I woke up this morning, I noticed that my eyebags looked a little larger than usual. I worried that I might be having allergies again from last night’s dinner. I get allergic reactions to some seafood causing my face and eyebags to swell but that is on rare occasions only.  To be sure, I went to my doctor for a checkup. Well my doctor said I don’t have to worry about allergies this time. She suspects that I am dehydrated because of the dark circles around my eyes. My eyebags just look swollen because of the dark outline around it. She suggested that lots of fluids, preferably natural fruit juices.

Dark circles around the eyes  can be caused by so many factors. Most common is hereditary of course, meaning you cannot do much about them (just blame your parents). Some other factors are dehydration, lack of sleep and long hours of PC work. Dark circles can also be symptoms of much more serious health problems like poor circulation, iron deficiency, anemia, or kidney problems. Some of the less serious causes can be remedied naturally by taking more fluids, and getting enough sleep. For the other factors, I suggest seeking medical advice.

I cracked the bowl, no kid

I have a confession to make. Late last night, I went to the bathroom and saw a small mouse in the corner of the tub. Quickly I grabbed the mop and tried to hit it! I was not able to hit it after several attempts so I got so frustrated. It just moved too fast for me. Suddenly I found the mouse on the toilet bowl. I silently raised the mop, carefully aimed, I gave it all I’ve got! BAM! Apparently, it still escaped through the drainage pipe which was left open. But the mouse was just the least of my problem …  for the hit I did made a huge crack on the bowl. When mother finds out about this she’ll definitely kill me!, I thought. (I exaggerated of course).

At breakfast, I told mom about what happened and fortunately, she laughed instead of being angry. She said she was planning to renovate the  bathroom and she already had some nice designs in mind. It has already been 15 years since the bathroom was renovated so I guess it is okay even if  I broke the bowl. And so, after breakfast we went to the mall to shop for bathroom sets available on display. We both agreed on one design which included a bath tub, a luxurious shower, and a fashionable Toto toilet. The only thing left to do now is to convince Dad to buy that one. hehehe.

The best place to be in December? Outdoor!

mumblings No Comments »

It’s December! The best way to hang around with your family, friends, and/or relatives? Gathering around an outdoor fireplace (preferably while toasting marshmallows and drinking beer)! ^_^

It’s a good thing outdoor fireplace kits are simple to install nowadays. That means we can just have an outdoor party at any time! It would be great if we can also sing our hearts out via Videoke. Now if only we can convince our dear neighbors to bear with our blaring sound of Videoke for a couple of nights… Hmmm… maybe we should just ask them to join us so they won’t be complaining about the noise because they’ll be part of it 0;)

Anti wifi paint

I was looking for the driver software for my new Linksys router on the net when I stumbled upon a website talking about internet security and stuff. I got curious with a new invention called WiFi proofing paint which is (basically) a paint that is resistant to certain wireless frequencies like 3G, bluetooth and Wifi. Again (as with all weird inventions) Japanese were the ones responsible for it.The paint is has been developed to improve security in buildings and offices. It has lot’s of possible applications like in military facilities, airplanes, and even in movie theaters to avoid piracy. Anyhow, it was just an interesting topic to share.
